Liana’s underwater themed Bat Mitzvah celebration was amazing! DB Creativity and everyone involved truly transformed our client’s backyard to fit the underwater theme. There was even a mechanical shark! The lighting was incredible and there were three screens that either had live feeds of the event or showcased a few of the images we created during Liana’s underwater portrait session. (View them here: Liana’s Underwater Portrait Session)

The pool was covered over with the dance floor and the crew at Check One 2 kept things moving, as they always do. The evening started with a cocktails, sushi, henna, and building stuffed animals for charity. After cocktail hour everyone moved from the front yard to the back to prepare for Liana’s grand entrance. Liana entered, hit everyone with a surprise dance number, and the party went from there. It was a wonderful evening filled with family and friends. Congratulations Liana!

I love having the opportunity to shoot underwater! I had my first chance to photograph underwater a few years ago and the results were amazing! When Dana Bresin of DB Creativity had a client tell her they wanted an underwater theme for their daughter’s Bat Mitzvah she knew immediately where to send them for photography.

Liana’s session was a lot of fun. We decided to keep things simple, but give it a bit of an ethereal look. I built a rope swing, wrapped it in fake vines and weighed it down in the pool. The look is exactly what I had envisioned. We also used a floral crown that didn’t cooperate for the entire shoot, but did hold up for a few shots. Liana’s Bat Mitzvah reception was fantastic and not only were these images highlighted in her sign-in book that I created, but they were also projected on 3 screens during the reception. (Photos from that coming soon!)

My friend Jeremy Dayton with On Bended Knee Films also shot some behind the scenes footage during this shoot both above and below the water. Check out the video he created: Behind the Scenes – Underwater Shoot

Donay & Justin knew they wanted to do a “trash the dress” session, but Donay didn’t want to truly “trash” her dress. I let her know we could work around the idea of “elegance in a not-so-elegant environment”. After numerous location ideas we decided on using graffiti art in the art district of downtown Los Angeles to give the photos a little edge. Donay wanted to have vibrant color in the images and we definitely achieved that with the artwork. Since we were already going to be in downtown I also suggested photographing with the fountain in Grand Park. The fountain changes color and adds to the “trash the dress” idea with only the bottom of the dress getting a little wet.

As always, Donay and Justin were great to work with and it didn’t take much convincing to get them both into a window that was about 4 feet off the ground. It was a great spot that allowed me to truly surround them with the graffiti art. The first image here was simply something we came across during the shoot. Donay loved the red door and the light. Even though we wanted an edgy/attitude sort of look, this image came out beautifully and really captures the love these two share.

James and Patricia kept things simple. They flew into California, where James’ parents live, and held a small ceremony inside Bailey Canyon Park in Sierra Madre. Sierra Madre is a small town nestled in the hills just north of Pasadena. We had a bit of a hike to get to our ceremony location. It started with a short dirt trail, followed by a long concrete path, back to dirt, and over a bridge. Our final stop had was covered with trees, two of which created an arch; this is where they said they were married. James’ parents officiated. It was a great ceremony and we made sure to capture family photos, as well as some creative shots of the newly married couple.

Congratulations James & Patricia!

If you’ve ever spent some time talking to me, you know I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I strive for perfection in most everything I do, knowing I will never truly achieve it. Take this personality trait, throw in my first destination wedding, and the fact that the bride is an old friend, and you’ve got a recipe for some amazing photos!

Arleen & Jason’s wedding was fantastic! Their ceremony and reception were held on the MV Skansonia, a historic moored ferry boat sitting at the top of Lake Union in Seattle, Washington. Most people hear “Seattle” and think rain, but it’s not as bad as you might think. For Arleen & Jason’s wedding it was sunny with blue skies, not even a fluffy cloud in sight. We starting photographing with Arleen getting ready at their apartment in the Queen Anne neighborhood. Queen Anne is filled with historic homes, and Arleen and Jason’s apartment building is no exception. Great place to get a ton of detail shots of all of Arleen’s jewelry and her two dresses for the day. We also set up their first look in the lobby and took some creative shots here and at Gas Works Park, just around the corner from Skansonia.

You may recognize their building from their engagement session: Seattle Engagement Photography โ€“ Arleen & Jason

It was a great weekend filled with friends and family. I love getting to work with great couples and truly enjoy traveling to do so. Congratulations Arleen & Jason!
