Los Angeles Bat Mitzvah Photography – I love it when friends hire me to photograph for them. It’s even better when it is family, as is the case with Alexa, who’s one of my many cousins. It means a lot that they have such faith in me. Alexa’s Dad, Gary, is typically the one with the camera in hand for family events and he was very glad to pass the job along to me.

Alexa’s Bat Mitzvah was filled with family and friends. Everything was held at “The Mark” on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles; ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception. I’d the pleasure of working once more with the crew from Real Genius, who provided the music, dancers, and photobooth. There was also a fantastic candy and dessert bar. Below is just a small sampling of the evening.

Congratulations Alexa!

Orange County Wedding Photography – As much as I love photographing big, high-end weddings, what I really love is the people I work with and capturing the connection they share. Love and connection were flying all over the place at Jason & Stefanie’s wedding last Friday at the Old Orange County Courthouse. Stefanie and I only spoke on the phone prior to their wedding, but I could hear the excitement in her voice. Their wedding was small consisting of only 7 people, including themselves, Jason’s son, their parents, and Stefanie’s closest friend. As we shot, I let Stefanie know that a small wedding, doesn’t have to mean small photography.

We made use of a number of great spaces at the Old Orange County Courthouse and were even able to set up a quick first look before everyone headed inside. I’ve been obsessed with shapes, lines, and shooting through things lately and made good use of that here. I love what we captured.

Congratulations Jason & Stefanie!

Calabasas Newborn Photography – It’s Saturday and I’ve been photographing every few days for the last couple weeks, time for a pick-me-up full of cuteness.

Baby Hannah arrived a little early than expect, but all that meant was that her parents and big sister Morgan got to greet her that much sooner. When I arrived at their home for the newborn session it was very obvious that they were photo people. Albums and frames on the tables, and photos on every wall. (My kinda people). Not only did we capture one-week-old Hannah, but we involved the whole family, and gave big sis Morgan some photos of her own. The first and second photos here are some of my favorite, as they just kind of happened. We planned to use the letters with both sisters, but I hadn’t considered photographing from above until Morgan laid down opposite her letter (see the last image).

Malibu Portrait Photography – Ava’s Bat Mitzvah portrait session was simply fun to photograph. When I first met with Ava and her mom, I was told that Ava loved photography and had a thing for quotes (I’m pretty much the same.) They knew they wanted to photograph at the beach and I wanted to make sure we incorporated some elements that were special to Ava. I dug out some vintage cameras, including a set of enlarger filters (back in the film days), for Ava to use and told her mom to prepare a chalkboard with one of Ava’s favorite quotes.

We rescheduled this session twice due to the weather, but when we photographed last Sunday it was a gorgeous day (Which could be why there were at least 10 other photographers at El Matador Beach that day). I love off camera lighting, and I did a bit of it here, but this session really called for softer, more natural look. Sometimes I forget how much I love shooting with natural light and how great it can look when done properly.

Here is Ava’s mom’s reaction when I sent her the complete gallery, “OMG! They are gorgeous. I have not idea how we are going to pick.”

La Canada Wedding Photography – Michael & Monica kept their wedding simple with family, friends, and a few Disney elements thrown in. My day started off photographing Monica’s wedding dress at the Embassy Suites in Glendale. There were not a lot of options for hanging her dress, so I opted for putting it in the elevator and using the reflective ceiling. I love the shot! Although my assistant and I kept the door open so we could shoot I did end up riding the elevator up and down a couple of times with the dress and had to ask some people to wait for the next elevator.

The ceremony was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale and since they held a full mass I had some time to direct my attention to the guests. I captured some very cute shots of Michael & Monica’s daughter, who was one of the flower girls.

The reception was held at La Canada Flintridge Country Club, where we took a few golf carts out on the property to get some shots of just the two of them. I however, had an idea that I had to wait all night to attempt. The country club has a large pool and I wanted to take some shots at dusk. I always find it funny when I show my clients the back of the camera and their reaction is, “Wow, you are good!” I can’t wait to hear what they think after seeing the version below. Congratulations Michael & Monica!
