Malibu Portrait Photography – Ava’s Bat Mitzvah portrait session was simply fun to photograph. When I first met with Ava and her mom, I was told that Ava loved photography and had a thing for quotes (I’m pretty much the same.) They knew they wanted to photograph at the beach and I wanted to make sure we incorporated some elements that were special to Ava. I dug out some vintage cameras, including a set of enlarger filters (back in the film days), for Ava to use and told her mom to prepare a chalkboard with one of Ava’s favorite quotes.
We rescheduled this session twice due to the weather, but when we photographed last Sunday it was a gorgeous day (Which could be why there were at least 10 other photographers at El Matador Beach that day). I love off camera lighting, and I did a bit of it here, but this session really called for softer, more natural look. Sometimes I forget how much I love shooting with natural light and how great it can look when done properly.
Here is Ava’s mom’s reaction when I sent her the complete gallery, “OMG! They are gorgeous. I have not idea how we are going to pick.”
